Departmental Overview

The Berkeley Wireless Research Center (BWRC), now in its second decade, addresses the design, conception, and implementation of the next-generation integrated wireless systems in state-of-the-art CMOS (and related) technologies. The focus is on integrated circuit and system advances needed to enable a vision of truly ubiquitous wireless: including the realization of always-connected reliable networks through advanced spectrum utilization techniques, the design of energy-efficient high data-rate links at 60 GHz and above, the investigation of the boundaries of ultra low-energy wireless networks, and the exploration of the leading edge circuit techniques and components that make these systems possible.

Responsibilities

20% Computing Infrastructure Architecture and Design: Working independently Designs, Proposes and directs the implementation of advanced computing systems to meet critical performance demands imposed by computer aided design software used by researchers at BWRC. These systems include all elements of the computing infrastructure; computing platforms, storage and file service systems, communications networks and security mechanisms. Independently specifies enhancements including software and hardware updates that will improve the performance and reliability of center computing systems, clusters and services. Architects and Manages centralized compute servers, cluster management policies and storage servers. Independently performs analysis and prepares specifications and budgetary justifications for purchase or upgrade of new computer.

20% Operating Systems and Applications Performance Analysis and Management: Working independently and with minimal technical supervision performs highly complex performance analysis of infrastructure computing systems to proactively specify modifications, enhancements or extensions to systems to achieve greater user productivity and improve systems cost/performance. Acquire, install, modify and support operating systems, databases, utilities and Internet/intranet-related tools including web services. Direct required patching of production operating systems including appropriate patch testing prior to distribution. Analyze new operating system releases to determine the appropriate time frame to upgrade. Perform comprehensive performance testing, interoperability verification with application software and bug resolution with the research team prior to production roll out.

20% Research User Support: Working independently, diagnose and correct highly complex computer system and software execution problems encountered by faculty, graduate student researchers, staff and industrial collaborators. Create support documentation as required to build research community knowledge base.

15% Systems and Applications Programming: Performs highly complex systems programming and systems support activities. Designs and implements systems to support automation of Systems Administration and monitoring. Conducts highly complex programming tasks to automate systems or provide new functionality as required by the research mission of the center.

15% Systems Security: Performs complex security control, audit and analysis activities to prevent unauthorized access to highly sensitive, confidential BWRC information assets. Maintains complex security systems protecting BWRC information assets and implementing internal access control policies.

10% Web Site Development and Management: Develop, enhance and Maintain the BWRC web site including overall architecture, HW platform, OS, content creation software, security, and back-ups. Develop database driven applications using systems such as MySQL, PHP, WordPress and Drupal to aid content creation and provide required functionality.


Required Qualifications

  • Must be able to communicate highly technical information in a clear and concise manner among varying levels in the organization.
  • Computer Languages Advanced Proficiency with Unix shells and tools.
  • Familiarity with C/C++ Proficiency with at least one scripting language (Python, Perl, Ruby, etc.).
  • Advanced, Expert proficiency with Linux (Debian/Ubuntu, RH derivatives).
  • Proficiency with Windows and OS X administration.
  • Programming and/or scripting abilities, preferably with PHP or other programming languages like C, Java, Perf, Ruby or Python.
  • Web programming language experience such as with HTML, CSS, Javascript, AJAX, PHP, ASP, .NET-Windows.
  • Web server administration experience with Apache, IIS, Drupal & Flash Media Streaming Server.
  • Network services experience including DHCP, DNS, LDAP,, SSH, VPN, NFS, AutoFS.
  • Advanced understanding of computer architecture, hardware and peripherals.
  • Familiarity with Qumulo Core or other similar clustered file systems.
  • Experience with containers and virtual machines and services such as Docker, VMWare vSphere, Proxmox, or Amazon EC2".
  • Experience in the configuration and operation of monitoring systems such as Ganglia and Nagios.
  • Experience in the administration of LFS clusters and the administration of queues and policies Advanced Complex system diagnostic skills.
  • Extensive user support experience.
  • Proficiency with RT or other ticketing systems.
  • Familiarity with various Version Control Systems - CVS, SVN, git, TCP/IP networking and Ethernet protocols.
  • Understanding of System and Network Security principles.
  • Experience with configuration management tools such as Puppet, or Ausible.
  • Has advanced knowledge, skills and abilities associated with identifying systems-related issues and actions needed to improve or correct performance issues.
  • Has knowledge of the design, development and application of technology and systems to meet business needs. Has skills associated with adapting equipment and technology to serve user needs.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $120,000 - $150,000.
