ASSIGNMENT DETAILS

UC San Diego is hiring a talent pool of Senior Marine Cooks to support the dining needs of our seagoing research vessels. This will be a great opportunity for candidates who are open to on-call or per diem-type work with UC San Diego.

Duration: This will be a rolling need with the department anticipated to last up to 1-3 months.

Compensation: $32.92/hour. This role is not currently eligible for benefits through the university.

Work Schedule: Variable - 8 hours a day with potential for overtime. Employees will be asked to support research trips lasting up to 7 days.

Location: Point Loma and on Ship during research operations.

DESCRIPTION

Under the general supervision of the Master, the Senior Marine Cook is responsible for the preparation of quality food/meals in a fast-paced, high-volume food service environment.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Planning, preparing and serving three meals daily for day trips with up to 30 scientists and the crew and, overnight trips with up to 12 scientists and the crew which could range up to 7 days, efficient operation and maintenance of all kitchen equipment and personnel, execution of applicable standards regarding safety, food handling, cleanliness, sanitation, and personal appearance.
  • Duties also include set up/clean up of the Mess Hall, maintenance of Galley & Mess Hall supplies, stock rotation, menu planning, and other tasks as appropriate.
  • Incumbent will develop and submit stores/provisions requisitions and receive same.
  • Incumbent may work independently on smaller vessels of the SIO fleet.
  • In emergencies, perform assigned duties listed on the ship's Station Bill, any additional duties deemed necessary, and execute all lawful orders of the Master and other ship's officers
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must have 1-2 Years of prior cook experience.
  • Must be comfortable shopping for supplies and creating menus as the only cook on a research vessel.
  • Must be open to working at sea for extended periods
  • Must have or obtain TWIC Card before employment (https://www.tsa.gov/twic)
  • Must have a valid U.S. ID
  • Must have a valid U.S. Passport
  • Must have a valid Food Handlers Card (https://www.servsafe.com/ServSafe-Food-Handler/Get-Certified)
  • Preferred but not Mandatory - Valid Driver's license
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must clear Background, Motor Vehicle Records and Reference Checks before hiring.
  • Must be able to pass U.S. Coast Guard DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing

This position has been identified as a Mandated Reporter pursuant to the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) and requires immediate reporting of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, or neglect of anyone under the age of 18. It is the responsibility of the Mandated Reporter to ensure that they obtain proper training in order to fulfill their reporting responsibilities as required by the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and University policy, and to complete and submit the required reports to the UC San Diego Police Department without delay.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $68,733 - $100,146 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $32.92 - $47.96

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
