Job Summary

The Department of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco are hiring Nurse Practitioners for the Jail Behavioral Health Service (JBHS). The Psychiatric NPs will provide clinical assessment and treatment for patients in the JBHS.

Department Description

JBHS is committed to providing outstanding care to our incarcerated population, and includes clinicians with experience and expertise working with patients of diverse cultures and experiences. Led by Medical Director Loren Roth, MD, JBHS is two UCSF Attending Psychiatrists, with San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) Medical, Nursing, and BHS staff contributing to a high quality collaborative multidisciplinary team.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum one (1) year experience as a psychiatric nurse practitioner.
  • Minimum one (1) year experience with the chronically mentally ill, preferably with patients with a dual diagnosis (substance abuse/mental illness).
  • Ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively with others.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately and be detail orientated.
  • Ability to efficiently prepare written summaries of activities, set priorities and complete reports within required time frames.
  • Ability to work with patients and program staff from diverse cultural and social class backgrounds
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated excellent attendance and reliability

Preferred Qualifications

  • DNSc - Doctor of Nursing Science.
  • Prior related ZSFG experience or prior UCSF or UC experience.
  • Ability to qualify as UCSF Health trusted interpreter in Spanish.
  • Experience using EPIC/AVATAR.
  • Cantonese/Mandarin speaking ability.

License/Certification

  • California driver's license (CDL) if required for position.
  • Current national certification from an accepted certifying agency and provide by first day of work

  • Hold a current and active RN and NP and Furnishing license in California.
  • Complete a BRN recognized graduate master's degree program as a nurse practitioner.
  • Obtain an active and/or transferable DEA license to California and provide evidence by 90th day of clinical practice. (It is the responsibility of the employee to transfer their DEA license to their new place of employment if from out of state, via online DEA portal and provide evidence of transfer).
  • Submit enrollment with CMS Medicare and Medicaid through credentialing by first clinical day. CCS enrollment as appropriate for pediatric environments.
  • Current AHA CPR Certification.
  • State regulation requires that you have a supervising physician to practice.
  • Incumbents with less than 6 months of NP experience will be hired as a Nurse Practitioner 1.


UCSF Medical Center and Campus requires certain healthcare providers to be credentialed. In most cases this is done through its Office of Medical Affairs & Governance (OMAG) prior to the first working day. Credentialing and approval of the Standardized Procedures takes between 60-90 days but can vary.
