Job Summary

The Cardiothoracic Surgery Physician Assistant position has clinical, procedural, administrative and educational responsibilities in the care of adult patients requiring cardiac and thoracic surgery. Under the supervision of the Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery and the Heart & Vascular Director of Advanced Practice Nursing, the Cardiothoracic Surgery PA will have a critical role in the inpatient setting, with both team member and individual duties. Responsibilities will include preoperative and postoperative patient examination and assessment, diagnosis and planning; treatment implementation, coordination and continuity; performance of specific procedures; development of practice protocols and evaluation of quality of care; education of patients, families and other health care practitioners.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Required Qualifications

Physician Assistant:

  • Minimum one (1) years related adult Cardiothoracic/Cardiovascular patient care experience as a Physician Assistant and/or minimum 1 years of adult ICU experience as a Physician Assistant in a Cardiothoracic ICU/Coronary Care Unit/Cardiovascular ICU setting
  • Possess the skills, knowledge, and abilities essential to successfully perform the duties of the assigned position

Sr. Physician Assistant:
  • Specific training and experience related to Cardiothoracic/Cardiovascular patient care as a Physician Assistant, minimum of 5 years of which 3 are in the most recent years
  • Possess the skills, knowledge, and abilities essential to successfully perform the duties of the assigned position

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum one (1) year of OR First Assist and/or EVH experience at a high volume center
  • Endoscopic radial artery harvest experience at a high volume center

License/Certification

  • Must hold an active and current California Physician Assistant License (PA)
  • California driver's license (CDL) if required for position
  • Must hold current national board certification by first day of work and maintain
  • Must hold an active and transferable DEA license to California and have evidence of transfer by 90th day of clinical practice. (It is the responsibility of the employee to transfer their DEA license to their new place of employment if from out of state, via online DEA portal and provide evidence of transfer)
  • Must have completed an AAPA recognized graduate master's degree program as a physician assistant.
  • Must have submitted enrollment with CMS Medicare and Medicaid through the credentialing process by first clinical day
  • Must hold current AHA BLS as minimum requirement
  • Must hold current AHA ACLS as minimum requirement


UCSF Medical Center and Campus requires certain healthcare providers to be credentialed. In most cases this is done through its Office of Medical Affairs & Governance (OMAG) prior to the first working day. Credentialing and approval of the Standardized Procedures takes between 60-90 days but can vary.
