Job Summary

The UCSF EXCEL (Excellence through Community Engagement & Learning) Program is a training and paid internship program which aims to develop the potential workforce in UCSF's surrounding communities and provide San Francisco residents with access to employment opportunities in the field of Medical Administration.

The program is a work-based learning program that uses both classroom and on-the-job training to prepare participants for career path jobs in the healthcare sector. After completing 10 weeks of computer, administrative, customer service, and medical terminology training with JVS (Jewish Vocational Service), UCSF's community-based training partner, participants are placed in paid, four-month administrative internships within UCSF's various departments, throughout both the campus and medical center.

Please note: An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

Required Qualifications

  • San Francisco resident, 18 years or older with High School diploma /GED
  • Eligible for the JobsNOW! Program through San Francisco's Human Services Agency
  • Proficient in English
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and basic office skills
  • Able to successfully complete the on-boarding process, including a criminal background check, occupational health clearance and a substance abuse screen. *
  • Compliance with UCSF Covid-19 vaccination requirements, including booster: coronavirus.ucsf.edu/employees

Preferred Qualifications

  • Self-starter
  • Strong organizational and detail-oriented skills
  • Exceptional customer service skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • High comfort level with Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel)
  • Proficiency in basic computer tasks (editing and saving files, managing file locations, accessing and moving files on Box)
  • Writing skills suitable for effective communication within and outside the department via email
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a functioning team
