What The Role Is

The Principal Wind Engineer will support wind turbine fleet consisting of a diverse pool of original equipment manufacturers, nominal output capacity, and project life cycle. Clearway fleet currently stands at more than 4GW and is located across various regions of the United States, with a robust new project pipeline of ~3GW targeted over the next three years. The primary responsibilities of this position will consist of support of the field operations team, project management, performance analysis, and root cause analysis. Additionally, a significant portion of responsibilities will include contribution to and development of the Asset Integrity Management and Asset Performance Management platforms for optimization.

The position is based out of the Scottsdale, Arizona office.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Support of wind fleet operations and direct interactions with OEMs
  • Focus on major turbine systems/components, their reliability, maintenance optimization, and repair/upgrade options
  • Project management of major technical issues to resolve and improve CAFD for the wind fleet
  • Program management of the wind fleet technical optimization
  • Development and execution of wind turbine life cycle reliability platform
  • Root cause analyses (RCA) of turbine main components & high impact failures/faults
  • Manage RCA activities by coordinating with internal resources such as asset managers, property insurance risk managers, and external experts, independent engineers, and labs
  • Program development and execution of the Asset Integrity Platform for the wind fleet
  • Contribute and develop Asset Performance Platform for the wind fleet
  • Development of repair and rebuild specifications for major components such as main bearings, gearboxes, and generators
  • Development of requirements and qualification of 3rdparty service providers for major components
  • Research of operational and repair methods to improve the generation and lifespan of wind turbines
  • Engineering support of field personnel for corrective and preventative maintenance of wind turbines
  • Development of maintenance procedures, work instructions, safety procedures including implementation of Reliability Centered Maintenance practices for the fleet
  • Review of new technology to support new project development
  • Review and development of technical specifications for refurbishment and upgrades of turbine components/systems as part of repower initiatives
  • Review of legacy technology from reliability point of view to support project acquisitions
  • Development of engineering standards
  • Adhere to appropriate company health, safety, environment, and quality processes for the business utilizing industry best practice
  • Participate as a team member promoting initiatives to improve component performance, quality, and functionality
  • Participate in continuous improvement process relating to fleet-wide initiatives
  • Travel, including overnight on short notice (up to 25%)
What You'll Bring
  • BS or MS in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering is highly preferred. Will consider years' experience in lieu of undergraduate degree. High school diploma minimally required.
  • Minimum of seven years of experience in engineering or field operations and maintenance, is required
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to manage simultaneous projects/work streams, set priorities, and exercise independent judgment
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts to both a technical audience and a non-technical audience
  • Must have an in-depth understanding of rotating machinery and reliability of equipment
  • Must possess a good understanding of maintenance plans and protocols
  • Ability to interpret/follow/develop technical instruction in verbal, written, diagrammatic and schedule formats
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, technical manuals, and commissioning reports
  • Ability to troubleshoot turbine faults, failures and develop appropriate corrective action plans/programs
  • Knowledge of proper use LOTO for energy isolation
  • Knowledge of applicable standards for wind industry (IEC 61400, UL, NEC, and OSHA)
  • Ability to travel with a short-term notice to Clearway Energy sites throughout the continental U.S.
  • Ability to climb wind turbines with or without a climb assist. Capable of working at heights of up to 390'

What Would Be Nice
  • BS or MS in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering is highly preferred.
  • 10 years of direct experience as wind, platform, performance, or reliability engineer with multiple brands of wind turbines
  • Experience managing
  • Experience managing deployment of software upgrades or other performance/reliability enhancements
  • Direct experience with SGRE equipment, both legacy and current, highly sought after
  • Expert level knowledge of various drivetrain system designs employed in wind turbines
  • In-depth understanding of electrical or hydraulic pitch system (both preferable)
  • Experience developing reliability, maintenance optimization, and repair/upgrade options for wind turbines
  • Demonstrated experience in development of repair/rebuild specifications for major components such as main bearings, gearboxes, generators
  • Experience developing requirements and selection processes for approved 3rdparty major component service providers
  • Experience in gearbox and generator root cause analysis and development of up-tower mitigation options, repair processes, and upgrade solutions
  • Experience with setup and design of experiment for in field measurements
  • Experience with analytical processing of sensor data
  • Full turbine lifecycle analysis and reliability program implementation
  • Six Sigma certification or statistical quality control analysis experience
  • Weibull or similar lifetime and failure rate prediction techniques
  • Monte Carlo simulation experience

The pay rate for the successful candidate will depend on geographic location, skills, relevant and demonstrated experience, education, training and certifications, and other factors permitted by law. This role is eligible to earn an annual cash bonus, subject to personal and company performance goals.

Salary Range Across all U.S. Locations
$124,000$184,000 USD
